Medications

Warning: This page is about my own experiences and considerations. It is not medical advice. Consult a doctor about medications and their side effects.

Relax

I have to pay attention to keep my neck muscles relaxed. Even after 30 years, that is not something automatically.
In 2026, my neck trouble can already increase when watching an exciting movie, and I watch a movie while lying on my back in bed.
It might be helpful to take something to relax better, however, it turned out that is not the case.

Sometimes antidepressant medications are prescribed to help to relax.
I have never used such medications. I am even hesitant to use them. They can change a person's personality (reduce the conscience). I suspect that with my kind of neck complaints the chance is greater that they work counterproductive.

I used pills with St. John's wort for a few months.
My back started to hurt more. I always have to pay attention to my posture all the time, and apparently I was more careless with that.

I also used pills with Valerian for a few months.
After a few months, my thoughts became more confused.
This website is made by myself and I started with 3D printen in 2022 to put my mind on something else. That part of my thoughts of logic and mathematical thinking got worse.
I'm not sure, but it seemed as if I was a little anxious/scared sometimes. That might be normal for others, but I don't have that.
After I stopped using Valerian, my thoughts returned to how it was before.

Some people use THC oil to relax.
I have never used that. I have even never used drugs in my whole life, and I want to keep it that way. In my opinion, it is possible that THC oil in combination with other things has negative effects in the long term. I know examples of people who easily use THC oil and alcohol and who mentally go downwards later in life.

The best remedy for me is probably a hot shower. I let the hot water go over my head, neck and back.
This helps both with mild pain and severe pain. However, if the pain and other symptoms increase too much, then I am no longer able to take a hot shower.
I worked for half days from 1992 to 1997, and I took the hottest possible shower before going to work. The hot water has damaged the skin of my lower legs. That is still visible after 30 years.

Painkillers

The disadvantage of painkillers is, that if the dose is too low, they have little or no effect.

I used Aspirin and similar painkillers in the past.
They can be bad for a stomach, and my stomach started to hurt. After I stopped taking those painkillers, it took a year before my stomach felt normal again. I don't use such painkillers anymore.

Sometimes I use Paracetamol with caffeine.
For example, with an emerging mild headache or to lie on my bed a little easier. As a painkiller I do notice some of it, but it is not much.
Paracetamol without caffeine does not even help with an emerging mild headache.
It is important to use Paracetamol with care, and not taking too much. That is difficult for me to keep track of, because I don't always have a good day and night rhythm. But even if the daily amount of Paracetamol is not too much, then it is still possible that there are side effects. I got skin irritation and itching, and that disappeared when I stopped taking Paracetamol daily.

A medication against migraine is for example Sumatriptan.
I use that when I have a migraine.

From 1998 up to now, I use Tramadol when the pain is getting serious.
I think that I am more and more used to it, because it does not work as well as it did in the past. Fortunately, the side effects are also proportionally less.
The advantage of Tramadol is that it works in two ways, it reduces the pain and it also helps to relax my neck muscles better.
The Tramadol that I get from the General Practitioner causes quite a few problems.
It starts working after 5 quarters of an hour, which is too long. After another 5 quarters of an hour it has finished working.
When I take a pill of 50 mg, then I have to wait 5 quarters of an hour, and if I don't notice anything, then I should have taken two. So then I take two and I have to wait another 5 quarters of an hour.
If the Tramadol works and I lie down on my bed, then I fall asleep. But 5 quarters of an hour after taking it, the pain starts to increase, and that wakes me up.
Then I take Tramadol again and have to wait another 5 quarters of an hour.
If I have to vomit, then I don't know how much of the Tramadol I have spit out.
